Descartes and God In his groundbreaking work, Meditations on First Philosophy, the French philosopher Rene Descartes lays the groundwork for many philosophical principles by attempting to “establish a bold and lasting knowledge” (171)1. The foundations for knowledge Descartes established would go on to influence a plethora of other philosophers and philosophical works. Descartes argues in his meditations first from the point of view of complete skepticism, using skepticism as a tool in order to discover what is real. Through this method, Descartes explains the existence of man as a “thinking thing,” the capacity for human error, the overall trustworthiness of our senses, the existence of a physical world, the mind and body as separate entities, and the existence of an infinitely perfect God. Descartes uses a variety of premises to help back up his idea of a prefect God. The main idea concluded from these premises is that man alone could not have come up with the idea of infin...

If God Exists

Within the Western part of the world monotheism has ruled this part of the globe. Monotheism is the belief of one creator, of which it is known to be “God” Throughout history though, many great philosophers have dedicated their lives to studying this ultimate Supreme Being and what makes this Supreme Being, God. People have developed a list of attributes to help describe and explain who God is. In the reply to Gaunilo, St. Anselm defines God as “that-than-which-a-greater-cannot-be-thought” and by accepting this definition it is understood that God must posses the most absolute and ultimate...

What Was The Role Of God

What is the role of God in the writings of Descartes and Pascal? Both the idea of God and the existence of God play a major role in the writings of Descartes and Pascal. Both certainly appear to believe in him though they argue the case for his existence very differently and they also give Him a very different sort of role in their works. Whilst Descartes claims that he is certain of the existence of God, using a large part of his Discours de la méthode pour bien conduire la raison, et chercher la verité dans les sciences to prove the supreme being’s existence, Pascal’s approa...

The Power Of God And Certainty

THE POWER OF GOD AND CERTAINTY INTRODUCTION The Meditations written by Rene Descartes clearly illustrated the existence of God and how his existence creates a sufficient level of certainty. This raises the question: Can an atheist truly be certain of anything? This paper will argue that based on Descartes’ Meditations an atheist would have little certainty in anything due to the lack of the power of God in an atheist’s life. In order to prove this, I will first argue Descartes believed that the power of god gives knowledge that allows the believer to have certainty. I wi...
