Ryerson Steel
In the century after its conception on the banks of the Chicago River in 1842, Ryerson grew into the nation's largest steel distributor and a Chicago institution, employing thousands in the area (Ryerson, 2014). Today, Ryerson Holding Corp. has operations in Brazil, China, and Mexico. But it is no longer the Goliath it once was, and certainly not in Chicago, where it has its headquarters but employs only 57 people (Ryerson, 2014). By the mid-20th century, the company had grown into the nation's largest distributor of steel. Ryerson is a premier service company, providing distribution and value-added processing to satisfy the needs of customers who create products from metal and associated products. The company is a sole-source provider of a broad portfolio of products and services, offering more than 70,000 products in stainless steel, aluminum, carbon steel and alloy steel (Ryerson, 2014). It processes more than one-half of products sold to meet specific customer requirements, offering advanced services like profile cutting, precision blanking, slitting and drilling.
