Introduction:
Many times, people wish to control their own fate. Through the decisions and relationships that people make or choose to have, their lives can become negatively affected and ultimately determine the outcome of their fate. In the short story, “The Piece of String,” by Guy de Maupassant, Maitre Hauchecorne is mocked and criticized throughout the story because of the false accusation of theft. In the town of Goderville, Hauchecorne was seen picking up a piece of string but was blamed for picking up a wallet.
