Abstract: This paper is devoted to the condensed study of Poe’s writing style in Poe's three short classics, "The Black Cat", "The Pit and the Pendulum", and "The Fall of the House of Usher". Despite Poe's seemingly inheritance from some literary forebears, his contribution and innovation for the literary subgenre is profound and significant. The origin term of "Gothic" can be traced back to "Goth", the notorious barbarous people of an old Germanic tribe. "Gothicism" develops gradually to indicate a grotesque style in architecture prevailing in the Middle Ages of Europe and later it is used in literature to convey the idea of "Dark Romanticism" that is excluded by the Classicists from the mainstream of the literatus. Gothic literature starts from the eighteenth century in England, and gradually forms a special school in literary world. Among the numerous celebrated Gothic classics, Edgar Allan Poe's fiction remains the most grotesque and unique. Compared to the other Gothic writers, Poe deepens the connotation of Gothic by exploring the themes of death, guilt, revenge, incest and morbid psyche as well as the supernatural mystery in these tales. Poe intends to psychologize the Gothic and has commenced to modify the traditional Gothic relationship, in which the direction of horrifying averts from outside to inside, from setting to self. The characters are more likely creative originator of the terrifying rather than passive victims or witnesses of their appalling plight, while the circumstances are merely the products of their imaginative mind. It is with Poe that the old "German" Gothic is finally brought into the contemporary setting. Darker and gloomier than the eighteenth century Gothic, Poe's performance for novelty in composition for the theme of Death achieves the uniqueness of his Gothic stories and the sole effect of terror that comes not from Germany, but from the soul.

When Poe began his literary career, Gothic literature was very favorable. Gothic novels, with European Middle Age as its background, told grotesque stories of feudal revenge, property contention, psychological abnormality and mental deliriousness. They employed super-natural powers and brought about the effects of bloody violence, absurdness and terror. During the end of 18th century and the first half of the 19th century Gothic literature reached its climax. Most of Poe's short stories fell into the category of Gothic literature. His stories suited both popular and refined tastes with great readability and artificial originality They were different from the bulk of Gothic tales, being popular but not vulgar. By reforming the common mode of Gothic tales, he contributed a lot to the composition of modern short stories. Poe explored the spiritual world of the humans in his tales. He made Gothic tales turn inward and appear psychologically-oriented when exploring the hidden passages and cabinets in human souls. Madness, deliriousness, extremities, abnormality, spiritual division and illusion remained recurrent themes in his tales, some heroes of which were bound to certain psychological extremities and broke down as a rule after painful contemplations, some so sensitive and anxious that they became victims of their nightmares, and some had deep insights into worldly affaires and what they had thought turned out eventually the fact. So far as the effect is concerned, it is the inner world of his heroes that shocks the reader instead of the simple criminal cases. Following the brief discussion of Poe’s writing style and the literary review on Edgar Allan Poe in the introduction, the first chapter will deal with Edgar Allan Poe and Gothic literature, tracing back to the origin of "Goth" with its connotation and the traditional characteristics of Gothic literature before Poe. Obviously as a result, the great influence that the Gothic literary forebears exert on Poe matters much for his own achievements on this very subgenre. Besides, Poe's own wretched life tragedy provides him the Gothic mind and his significance is partly due to his exploration and contribution to Gothic literature. Chapter two mainly illustrates types of elements of horror in Poe's short stories, which are imagery and symbolisms suggesting horror, the synchronization of peak and emotional explosion, the description of dark unconsciousness, the description of the death and resurrection of beauty and the trapped and helpless `I'. Among these elements of horror, we can also find Poe's aesthetical opinion and philosophical belief towards his life expressed in his writing. Chapter three deals with four models of death in Poe's fiction: annihilation, compulsion, separation, and transformation. Poe's fictions can be grouped, his many tales focus on death and some critics and writers have studied the death in Poe's fictions, sometimes their study on death involves some of Poe's poems, so I classified the models of death in them.
1 The Setting Techniques of Poe
After reading one of his works in class, I realized that his mysterious style of writing greatly appealed to me. Although many critics have different views on Poe's writing style, I think that Harold Bloom summed it up best when he said, "Poe has an uncanny talent for exposing our common nightmares and hysteria lurking beneath our carefully structured lives. " ( 7) For me, this is done through his use of setting style. 1.1 Setting Plays an Important Part in Poe’s Stories
1.1.1 Setting paint a dark and gloomy picture
In many of Poe's works, setting is used to paint a dark and gloomy picture in our minds. I think that this was done deliberately by Poe so that the reader can make a connection between darkness and death. For example, in the "Pit and the Pendulum", the setting is originally pitch black. As the story unfolds, we see how the setting begins to play an important role in how the narrator discovers the many ways he may die. Although he must rely on his senses alone to feel his surroundings, he knows that somewhere in this dark, gloomy room, that death awaits him. Richard Wilbur tells us how fitting the chamber in "The Pit and the Pendulum" actually was. "Though he lives on the brink of the pit, on the very verge of the plunge into unconciousness, he is still unable to disengage himself from the physical and temporal world. The physical oppresses him in the shape of lurid graveyard visions; the temporal oppresses him in the shape of an enormous and deadly pendulum. It is altogether appropriate, then, that this chamber should be constricting and cruelly angular...
