BASIC CONCEPTS
• COVERAGE: The act of writing/reporting of an
event for the purpose of publishing it.
• Masking: the design/writing/graphic which indicates
the name or identity of an online publishing
• Lead: The beginning of the story. A promise the
reader on what is to come in broadcasting is a
teaser’
• Hard news lead: also called direct lead or a summary
lead what the story is about.

More concepts
• Back up lead = supporting facts in the form of supporting sentences;
• lead quote= the first quote that backs up the lead or
augmenting quote – must be a strong quote;
• Nut graph = one of the structure of story writing. Is a
sentence or paragraph that states the focus.. What the story is about why it is newsworthy. Story must be written on a
major theme;
• Ending = the result, the conclusion, the answer, implications or the impact
• Context = sense of direction of the story
