The party sought total control, not only in the present, but even in the past and the future. The party also invested heavily in the controlling of memory. Without memory, the people cannot know what happened in the past, and question the lies of the party. Controlling the past also allowed the party to control the present and the future, because its subjects would agree with everything the party dictated. In order to control history and memory, the party forbade members of the party to keep written records of their lives. Instead, the party assigned people to account history in a revised version.
