Emphysema is described has a Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and is a combination of lung damage and mucous production that makes it hard to breathe. This is a chronic condition caused by damage to the alveoli air sacs in the lung. When the lungs are exposed to cigarette smoke, causes excess mucus production due to the destruction of lung tissue in the smaller airways. This makes them unable to hold there structure properly and the alveoli becomes damaged and inefficient in the absorption and transportation of oxygen and carbon dioxide in and out the body. This is a chronic condition that worsens over time; the symptoms may not be noticeable until they are severe enough to interrupt daily activities.
