Government Regulations on Emissions
The government should lessen their emission regulations imposed on vehicles. To help protect the environment, the government has imposed a strict line of regulations upon vehicles and their requirement to pass emissions tests. Manufacturers and owners are both affected by the rules relating to emissions.
Starting in 1970, The United States created the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to control the carbon emissions produced by motor vehicles (Vehicle Emissions Control). The EPA began to impose laws and guidelines that forced manufacturers to begin the production of more efficient engines and drivetrains. The first rule implied by the EPA was the usage of a PCV valve, or Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve. This valve pulls crankcase fumes heavy in unburned hydrocarbons into the engine's intake tract so they are burned rather than released unburned from the crankcase into the atmosphere. Many ideas like this would be introduced into the automotive industry in the years to come.
These new devices made cars cost more and perform poorly. By the year 1975, emissions had become so heavily demanding of cars, that manufacturers were detuning cars. They were forced to make the engines perform at less of its potential and use more fuel to operate. This lead to an increase in fuel consumption and in turn an increase of gasses being released. The government decid...
