INTRODUCTION
Disagreements about movie choices are not very uncommon among friends. Aside from physical individuality, personality is what makes us different from each other. Personality affects our preferences, perspectives and behavior. In this light, our group believes that there is a pattern in movie genre preference and personality, and through this research study; we hope to prove that such exists.
CHAPTER 1
RESEARCH AND ITS BACKGROUND
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Watching a movie is definitely a cheap form of entertainment in the country today. Compared with watching a live theater performance of Les Miserables for instance, watching the movie version is definitely a lot cheaper. Add to that the fact that most movie houses now are comfortable and safe. Thus, watching a movie has become one of the most common forms of entertainment, even among high school students.
Watching a movie may be a common choice of entertainment among a group of high school friends, however, arriving at a common choice of movie to watch is a different thing. This is because interests and preferences differ, even among a group of friends. Interest and preference may also reflect personality. Personality is also seen relative to a person’s decisions and attitude. For example, if you have phasmophobia or fear of ghosts, you wouldn’t want to watch horror movies but instead choose a lighter genre. Thus, it is interesting to investigate if one’s personality could be reflected by one’s movie preference.
This study aims to discover if a pattern in choice of movie genre and personality exists among high school students. Though a few studies have been conducted to connect the two variables, our group envisions a concrete pattern that will verify and concretize theories related to this study.
THEORETICAL/CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
Theoretical Framework
Rentfrow, the Director of Scientific Research for Signal Patterns and maker of the Personality Patterns online personality test (2013), explains that the Big 5 Model of Personality contains five broad dimensions of personality. These are Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Emotional Stability, and Intellect. As said in Dr. Jason Rentfrow’s psychology website (address of website), extraversion is the level of sociability and enthusiasm of a person. Agreeableness, on the other hand, is the level of friendliness and kindness. Meanwhile Conscientiousness is level of organization and work ethic; Emotional Stability is the level of calmness and tranquility and Intellect is the level of creativity and curiosity. Rentfrow emphasized that these five are not types of personalities but are rather dimensions of personality; meaning that every person’s personality is a combination of each of their Big 5 personality characteristics.
Adorno & Horkheimer (1979) expressed the “media effects” paradigm which assumes that media exposure can affect individuals’ attitude, emotions and behavior. As the critics say “people are not passive recipients of entertainment”. Since “movies” is an aspect of media, it is safe to assume that the movies that individuals watch can affect their attitude, emotions and behavior.
Carl Jung, in his book “Psychological Types” (1921), states that “movies occupy a prominent position as a recreational outlet. Dr. Tomas Chamorro – Premuzic, a rising star of psychology and world-wide expert in personality, said that an individual’s film preference unfolds a great aspect of a person’s personality.
Personality, according to Hans Eysenck’s theory of personality, is based on a person’s genetics and physiology. This theory states that there are three categories of personality, namely: Extraversion/ Introversion, Neuroticism/ Stability and Psychoticism/Socialization. In addition, Stillwell’s myPersonality on Facebook (2007), says that there are three personality characteristics that can express one’s movie preference. These are: Openness, Conscientiousness and Neuroticism.
Personality based tests can be derived from Carl Jung’s studies published in his book “Psychological Types” (1921). Another type of personality test is the EPQ or Eysenck’s Personality Questionnaire. Eysenck’s Personality Questionnaire measures the three aforementioned dimensions of personality. It is a proven test and can be a good instrument to know about an individual’s personality.
Another appropriate personality test is the Myer’s Briggs Test which has been perfected through 69 years of continuous test research beginning in 1943. This test can be compared to the well- known David Kiersey Test.
Lastly the Minnessota Multibasis Personality Inventory (MMPI) is a questionnaire that can be used to know certain movie preference.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The statement of the problem includes a clear description of the topic, and the reason of the research’s importance.
This study aims to establish a pattern in choice of movie genre and personality among selected students of SSAM. Specifically, it aims to answer the following questions: 1. Is there a pattern in movie genre preference and personality? 2. What is the most preferred movie genre of the students and what does this say about the personalities of the high school students of St. Scholastica’s Academy?
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
Watching movies is a common activity among teenagers. It is a major aspect of a teenager’s social life. A teenager’s choice of movie genre reflects his/her interest and may also reflect his/her personality. The results of this survey will be useful to teenagers, parents, teachers, and guidance counselors. The results will:
1. help parents understand their teenaged child better by raising awareness, knowledge and appreciation in p...
