Similarities between Knowledge Management and Total Quality Management Knowledge management involves the development of strategies, which enables the organization to develop and exploit knowledge as an asset in the organization in manner, which leads to value creation. Knowledge management involves the developing an organization culture, which results in knowledge creation and sharing (Knights and McCabe, 2002). To develop knowledge sharing culture an organization should ensure that it develops systems that facilitate an environment that supports knowledge creation. The organization should focus on integrating knowledge management in all its processes. For instance, knowledge used to develop products, which ensure the development of products, which meet the dynamic consumer needs. In addition, an organization should ensure that knowledge from the business environment is incorporated into the organization’s processes such as new product development. According to Ryan & Hurley (2004), knowledge management involves the conversation of inputs into outputs, using knowledge to ensure that organization derives maximum value from the process. The organization should ensure that it sets up an environment, which enables knowledge sharing between various departments. To enable knowledge sharing the different department must have information systems, which enable integration between various departments. For instance, the organizations should ensure that research and development team is communicating with the production team to ensure that during production changes in business environment to ensure the new product meets the dynamic needs of consumer (Choo, Linderman, and Schroeder, 2007). Knowledge management enables an organization to become an innovation leader thus becomes a trendsetter in the industry. Where an organization becomes the trend setter it ensures that it is market leader. The organization can only become a market leader when knowledge from the business environment enables management to forecast future market trends. Team building and collaboration are critical success factors during implementation of knowledge management as a strategy in any organization. The inputs into a knowledge management process include knowledge on raw materials, knowledge on consumer needs, and resources. On the other hand, the outputs of a knowledge management process include intellectual capital, improved methods of doing things, products and services, which reflect knowledge about consumers. According to Tiwana (2002), total quality management ensures the effective and efficient use of resources in achievement of consumer needs. Total quality management is the process of transforming raw materials into products and services, which meet and exceed the expectations of consumers as well as the organizations objectives (Ortiz-Perdomo, Gonzales-Benito, and Galende, 2009). The major objective of total quality management is meeting the expectations of consumers. Consumers comprise of both internal and external stakeholders.
