This Unit Activity will help you meet these educational goals: 21st Century Skills—You will use critical thinking skills and communicate effectively.

In this activity, you will analyze Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur and the Anglo-Saxon poem "The Dream of the Rood" for plot and themes. Then you will write a 3–5 page essay comparing and contrasting the plot and themes of these two works.


Directions and Analysis
Task 1: Analyzing Plot in Le Morte d'Arthur
Le Morte d'Arthur was written by Sir Thomas Malory probably in the early 1450s, but it was first published in 1485, after his death. This work follows the life and adventures of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. Before you complete this task, read book I of Le Morte d'Arthur.

a. List the major events in book I of Le Morte d'Arthur. This part of the story outlines the birth of Arthur, his claim to the throne of England, and his initial battles to secure and stabilize his reign. For example, the birth of Arthur is one important event. Arthur pulling out the sword from the stone is another major event. Make a note of least eight major events from this book. Note the chapters where you found the events.

b. Now that you have identified several of the most important events from the story, analyze how they are used to create the plot in the story. Separate the events into the plot stages of exposition (with conflict), rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution in the table below. For example, Arthur's birth is a part of the exposition. Arthur removing the sword from the stone is part of the rising action.
