Abstract

The assignment will examine the differing and sometimes conflicting characteristics of process design criteria and project management between a project-based and productbased design process within the same organization. 2.

Introduction

Today many of us are familiar with Google Earth and viewing images of the earth over the Internet, indeed similar products are offered by Microsoft and Apple together with others, including government and commercial organisations around the world.

The technical

term for the image is an “Orthophoto Map”, as every point on the image is viewed in its correct geographical location with no distortion caused by ground terrain or camera lens. The production of orthophoto maps has undergone a number of transformations over the past 15 years with different design processes being applied to different products and enduser requirements.

These changes have particularly affected the design process and the

way in which the product is manufactured, ranging from small project-orientated processes to mass production.

Business environment

The UK market is characterized by a number of SME organizations, high competition and projects awarded on a lowest price basis, which combined with the client’s lack of technical knowledge makes quality variable.

taken from aircraft, leading to different design processes depending upon specific requirements.

Therefore the relationship between operations and competitiveness is

critical to the success of the business.
In order to remain competitive Aerofilms Limited considered it had two solutions to consider.

The first was to reduce costs by using lower-cost labour abroad, but this was

rejected due to lack of quality control, it was also considered that competitors could take the same approach and so further reduce sales prices.

The second option was to turn

orthophoto map production into a high-volume, low-variety product available on-demand to the customer. The advantage of the second approach was to reduce overall costs and from a customer perspective, standardize the technology and have immediate delivery rather than go through a procurement and subsequent project period waiting for delivery at a future date.
