1. Demographics
1.1. Overall demographics
1.1.1. Size of companies
For easy reference and comparison, we have divided the sample into two subgroups for further analysis. One was “very small” companies, which have 1-9 full-time staff. The other was “small” companies, which had 10-99 full-time staff. According to the pie chart below, the total valid amount was 352. There were 45.7% “very small” companies, while 54.3% companies were “small”. And each subgroup had outstanding features in some aspect of IT usage.

1.1.2. Industry demographics
The following pie chart showed the industry segment of SMEs in Hong Kong. 40.3% of the SMEs were in the Import/Export industry and followed by manufacturing industry with 14.2% and retail industry with 11.6%. In contrast, only 0.9% of the SMEs were running business of restaurants and hotels.

1.2. Very small companies(a cross table for relation number of staff and IT staff) 1.2.1. Industry demographics
For “very small companies”, as shown in figure 2, the largest percentage was 50% in the import and export industry. Followed were retail industry with 16% and wholesale with 11%. In contrast, only 1% of community and personal services industry was included.

1.3. Small companies (cross table)
1.3.1. Industry demographics
As shown in the pie chart below, small companies covered 10 industries. And the three industries of the largest percentage were import/export with 32%, manufacturing with 19% and construction & real estate of 11%

1.4. Comparison
The segmentation of the industry between “very small” company and small company was different to some extent. Import/Export was the dominant industry for both. However, retail and wholesale ranked the second and third for very small companies while manufacturing and construction took the second and third place for small companies. 2. IT sage and needs

2.1. Very small companies
2.1.1. Current IT Usage
As shown in the table below, the average number of personal computers (PCs) was around 4 and the maximum was 10 PCs installed in “very small” companies.

According to the table below, the average lifespan of PCs in “very small” companies was 3.5 years, while the maximum lifespan was 5 years.
