What is Cancer?
Cancer usually defined as an unregulated excessive division of cells (Hall, 10th edition). Recognizable by an unusually high amount of active cells in normal tissues. Cancer is usually caused by a mutation or by the abnormal activation of a gene that usually codes for cell growth and cell mitosis. Increasing amounts of active cells in the cell cycle also causes increasing amounts of active cells in mitosis as well as in the S-phase, where DNA replication takes place. There are many types of cancer caused by many different factors, some environmental, some genetic and while some cancers are preventable others are inevitable due to genetics and heredity. The most prevalent types of cancer are Breast Cancer, Lung Cancer, Colon and Rectal Cancer, Pancreatic Cancer and Ovarian Cancer. Most types of cancer are in discriminatory, meaning men, women and children can develop that particular cancer such as Melanoma and various other skin cancers.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the U.S. (Joseph F. O'Donnell, 1992). Cancer is also the second leading cause of death in children. The most prevalent types of cancer that effect children are Leukemia and different variants of Lymphoma. Unfortunately, Americans have about a 1 in 4 chance of developing cancer and a 1 in 6 chance of dying from cancer. Cancer directly affect 3 out of 4 families (Joseph F. O'Donnell, 1992). Cancer accounts for more than 2 million hospitalizations each year in the U.S. Overtime, clinical researchers, doctors and other medical professionals have developed ways to treat most cancers in addition to publicizing and stressing the importance of early detection via yearly physicals, mammograms and testicular/gynecological exams for men and women respectively.
