Monday September 26th, 2011 CNN reported a story about three American hikers who were held hostage in an Iranian prison. “Fattal, Bauer and Bauer's now-fiancée, Sarah Shourd, were arrested after straying across the unmarked border between Iraqi Kurdistan and Iran in July 2009. Shourd was released in 2010, but Bauer and Fattal were freed only Wednesday, after 781 days in captivity and a trial for espionage that Bauer said was based on "ridiculous lies."” (CNN Wire Staff) The group experienced hours of isolation and terrifying sounds of screams of other inmates. Bauer made a comment about being stripped of their rights and freedom, this leads to a discussion held in class about the natural rights American’s have as well as the importance of knowing how other countries government’s operate. As an American you have natural or inalienable rights, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These are rights that cannot be taken away, they are god given and self-evident. Due to the hikers nationality they were denied these rights and kept hostage against their will. Not only were they kept in an Iranian prison they were allowed a total of fifteen minutes of phone calls within their entire 781 day stay.
