Lankov, in his lengthy book, outlines the time period after the Korean war, in which the Kim Il Song managed to secure North Korea and release it from the influence of the Soviets and to a lesser extent, China. Most of the book outlines the movements of the August group, a political faction in North Korea that attempted to lessen the rigidity of communism. The radical communist party responded with various purges that took effect among various intellectual groups such as those affiliated with Kim Il Song Academy. At the end of the purges, the August group remained under attack and continued for many years after.
