Imagination, relationships and experiences give individuals the opportunity to embark on a journey of self-discovery and develop a growing awareness of the society to which they belong. Each of these factors create situations which promote individual growth and development and give an individual the ability to understand and ultimately reflect on the society around them. Jane Austen’s 1817 novel ‘Northanger Abbey’ is a text which demonstrates these situations and leads characters to journeys of self-discovery. The female main character, Catherine Moorland, is an individual whose imagination, relationships and experiences all affect her ability to develop as a person and understand the society around her. Throughout the novel, the changes which occur in Catherine Moorland are clearly evident. The imaginative experiences and relationships which she is a part of reflect the inner, imaginative and physical journeys which take place throughout the novel. Through these, Catherine Moorland is ultimately lead on a journey of self-discovery and establishes a growing awareness of the society to which she belongs.
