In the essay by Dennis Prager, “A speech Every American High School Principal Should Give”. He makes a statement; “I could not care less if your racial makeup is black, brown, red, yellow, or white.” “The only identity I care about, the only one this school will recognize, is your individual identity--your character, your scholarship, your humanity.” These two sentences led me to agree conditionally because students should be able to unite for one common goal; however, they also need the opportunity to learn about their own values and individuality. Today’s high school students should be building moral integrity, developing ethical character, and gaining certain knowledge of their own heritage; developing academic growth, along with experiencing other cultures to influence important societal customs. Education and understanding motivates students to take initiative and attain aspirations to lead a purposeful lifestyle. Independence and freedom allows one to maintain their values and ensure equal opportunity. It’s imperative that schools do not influence discrimination, segregation, stereotyping, or support prejudice behaviors. It is crucial to have American values in our high schools such as Freedom, Equality, Capitalism, and God; it keeps the focus on what is most important, education and academic growth.
