Anger From Fans, Chicks And a Song All About It
“Not Ready to Make Nice” is a song written by Natalie Maines, a member of the Dixie Chicks, who wanted to “sing out” about her comment made concerning our president at the time, George W. Bush. Dixie Chicks is an all girls country band from Dallas, Texas that is made up of two sisters and the lead singer, Natalie Maines. Natalie made the comment about the war in Iraq and said to the audience "...we don't want this war, this violence, and we're ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas." This shows that Natalie loves the state of Texas and America like many country singers usually do. After the comment was made, Americans had mixed emotions, should they agree or disagree with this statement especially from a person who they have been listening to for so many years. The song “Not Ready to Make Nice” was released as a single in June 2006, three years after the comment was made to the London crowd and then was watched on the Internet and many television networks. The song was a way of letting the nation know her side of the story; it was not an apology, just an explanation of why she has the right to say what she believes. The lyrics became controversial because it gave light to the First Amendment, Freedom of speech. This song became the icon of this controversial statement by discussing threats made to the artists, their loss of fans, and anger towards people’s reactions.
